Decarbonization, i.e. the reduction of CO₂ emissions, requires a genuine economic and technological transformation. It is in this context that the MerVent project is part of: working on energy efficiency through wind propulsion.

context
The MerVent 2025 project aims to design, build, and operate the first industrial container ship powered by a hybrid propulsion system combining wind-assisted propulsion and synthetic fuel. This approach is expected to reduce CO₂ emissions by at least 50% compared to conventional vessels of this type. Wind propulsion therefore lies at the core of this ambitious project.

This container ship concept is a true precursor to a new generation of decarbonised commercial vessels, as it integrates:
01

An innovative overall vessel design

02

A hybrid propulsion system combining wind power and an alternative fuel (methanol)

03

A CO₂ capture system

04

A decision-support system for onboard energy management

purpose
All these technological components are particularly complex and each have very specific and precise ranges of use. In addition, the ship will encounter very varied environmental conditions during its voyage (wind, sea, currents, etc.), which complicates the use, at all times, of these technological components.

OSE therefore has a strategic objective: to develop an intelligence unit that makes it possible to orchestrate the overall functioning of this equipment in a coherent manner. This is the only condition to be able to derive the best benefit from this energy architecture of the ship (fuel, CO2 emissions).

Because automotive decarbonization and the decarbonization of fishing are also key issues, the OSE team supports its partners in their energy transition through daring projects.

ACCELERATing the ENERGY EFFICIENCY of seagoing vessels

OSE brings its expertise to the MerVent 2025 project by developing dedicated tools for vessel design and real-time energy management. Do you have a similar project?

missions
Historically, the creation of these routes — combining specific percentages of urban, rural and highway driving, with slope constraints — was carried out manually, a time-consuming and complex process. The core of the Geomatics project lies in the development of an algorithm capable of automatically generating paths, responding precisely to the instructions provided by the engineering teams.
