The main objective of the project is to demonstrate the feasibility of decarbonizing a utility vehicle by converting its internal combustion engine to hydrogen.

Brought together in a consortium, eight major players from the private and public sector won one of the CORAM 2021 calls for projects (Steering Committee for Automotive and Mobility Research), for their “Hymot” project, the objective of which is to demonstrate the feasibility of decarbonizing light utility vehicles (LCV).
Supported by France Relance, ADEME and BPI France, CORAM aims to support R&D projects accelerating the marketing of innovative and sustainable technologies, services and solutions in terms of mobility. This project is thus part of the French strategy for the development of the green hydrogen sector.
Together, these eight players (Alpine Racing, Bosch France, Ecole Centrale de Nantes, Faurecia Système d'Echappement, IFP Énergies Nouvelles, OSE Engineering, Renault, Total Energies) will work jointly to study an innovative technology, the hydrogen engine, which will enable the decarbonization of light utility vehicles (LCVs), by converting the internal combustion engine to hydrogen.
This project must show that a virtuous solution is possible and lasting for light utility vehicles with specific needs, that is to say covering long distances on a daily basis and transporting heavy payloads. A real concrete application of the use of hydrogen in the service of carbon-free mobility, this engine aims to become a complementary solution, alongside battery electric vehicles and vehicles equipped with a fuel cell. Its main advantages: reduced recharge time, increased autonomy and greater power delivered. Also aiming for the virtual elimination of polluting emissions, this technology should also allow LCVs to circulate in future low-emission zones (ZFE), set up in large cities.

With 31% of French greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, transport is the activity that contributes the most to France's GHGs. Working towards decarbonization is therefore a major societal issue, in addition to being a challenge for companies operating in this sector. This ambitious partnership, thanks to the sharing of skills between high-level private and public actors, will have a concrete impact on the decarbonization of the transport sector, via the implementation of an innovative and sustainable solution for the automobile industry. . This project is an important step in the development of a French sector of excellence in hydrogen, and opens up concrete economic prospects on French territory: sustainability of industrial sites and development of skills on hydrogen throughout the supply chain. value.
